'Shop with a Cop' Saturday December 13
"Shop with a Cop"
is coming this Saturday morning, December 13. The program allows under-privileged kids from 6 months to 15 years of age to shop at the Covington Wal-Mart with a deputy from the King County Sheriff’s Office, and buy toys with up to $50 of donated money.
This will be the biggest year ever, with over 310 kids who will get to go on the toy spree with a "cop buddy." A Sheriff’s deputy will escort the child into the store, and assist with the purchase.
Funds for the toys were donated by local businesses and service organizations, and will be used to purchase whatever toys the child wants for their siblings or themselves.
This year the kids will also get their pictures taken with their police “shopping buddy” next to a patrol car. Santa Claus will be there too!
The Greater Maple Valley Community Center assisted with organizing and coordinating with families, as did local school counselors. The kids and foster kids are from south King County communities.
The program is unique because, unlike most Christmas charity programs, the kids get to pick out their gifts, and get to interact with a police officer.
