Renton FilmFrenzy Awards
Winners Featured Serious, Playful Themes

A crowd of about 250 joined emcee and KING TV Evening Magazine's Jim Dever to celebrate the work of 17 budding film directors, actors and producers at the Second Annual Renton FilmFrenzy Curvee Awards Gala
on Tuesday evening, October 27. Ten of the 17 film entries were shown
at the gala.

Entrants were tasked to create a film short no longer than four minutes, and rules required that films must be entirely shot in Renton and produced in just 50 hours. Entries were divided into to categories: Student Division (High School & Below) and an Open Division.

Light-hearted Themes Dominated Entries
Most of the film entries focused on light-hearted humor, but one of the two category winners raised attention to a more serious theme.

"Renton Rap" by Nathan Stolzfus took the first place award in the
Student Division. Stolzfus, a student at Northshore Junior High School in Bothell's Northshore School District, crossed several city lines to enter this competition. Stolzfus wanted to thank his mother for driving his crew everywhere in his acceptance speech, and his crew was clearly pleased with their award. Playful lyrics and costumes made the crowd giggle throughout the film.

"Ayuda Pequeno (A Little Help)" by Christopher Chacom was the
judge's favorite for the Open Division. Focused on the theme of homelessness, Chacom's star featured young Jose Arellano, who gave
with what little he had to help. Chacoma's entry lists him as a student,
but at press time, the school he attends had not been identified.

Impressive young Arellano also won the Best Actor Award.

Born in California, Chacom moved to Iowa for a few years. He then moved to the Seattle area and was struck by the amount of homeless people, which was in striking contract to what he experienced in Iowa. This condition was the basis for his inspiration in addition to the support of his church to make the film.

"Ayuda Pequeno" also won FilmFrenzy's grand prize, "Best Picture."

Another standout was a touching video about Renton titled "I AM RENTON" by Nate Jones. This film received the award "Best Use of Renton" and was an excellent promotion of the City showcasing engaged neighbors who contribute to the Renton community.

Fairwood Community News will post the videos when they are made available.
