Fairwood Area Boy Scout Troop 455
Fills Days with Service, Fun and Food

Boy Scout Troop 455 is known for its activities that serve the community. The New Year begins with trucks weaving through Fairwood Communities to gather discarded Christmas trees and dispose of them at a local recycling facility.

What Fairwood residents may not know is that the level of service and fun activities continues, leaving a strong sense of service, community and friendship among a group of responsible young men.

Two of the Scouts' current projects involves food, and one of those activities includes an invitation to the greater Fairwood Community.

Monthly Food Bank Service
Boy Scout Troop 455 is working closely with the Renton Salvation Army Food Bank to arrange for a monthly community service project.

The Troop, based at the Fairwood Community United Methodist Church, performed their first activity on January 30 with about ten scouts and five adults participating.

On February 18, during most of the Scout’s winter vacation from school, about 12 scouts volunteered.  Combined with the additional friends and parents, there were about 25 people working.

"It was wonderful to see how much they helped the food bank accomplish, said Scout Leader Brian Porter.  "The kids were terrific, working 2½ hours, sorting two truckloads of produce, meats, and canned goods."

Once the sorting was done, they helped sort the food by category and shelve the containers for future use.

"The manpower provided that day was amazing!" said Porter.  "The boys worked without complaint and Ezekiel Mafusire, the manager at the Renton Salvation Army Food Bank, is looking forward to having the Troop back again on March 6."

Pancake Breakfast March 14
The next act of service has a combined goal: Serve the community with good food and raise some funds for fun.

The Troop is actively selling tickets and preparing for their Annual Pancake Breakfast at the Fairwood Community Methodist Church on March 14 from 7-11 am.

"This is the Troop’s big fundraiser for the year, and the community really enjoys being served breakfast by the boys," said Porter.

Last year, the Troop served nearly 400 breakfasts and they expect to do even better this year. Proceeds from the breakfast help to pay for the Troop's activities, an essential part of their budget.

Everyone is encouraged to come out and enjoy a delicious breakfast served by the Scouts.

Winter Camping Fun
Traditional Scouting activities are a mainstay of the Troop, and one of the highlights to the year is the Troop's annual Winter Camp, in addition to regular campouts, even through the winter.

One of the Winter highlights is Winter Camp at Camp Sheppard near Mount Rainier.  February 6-8 was the annual Camp this year, with 16 boys and seven adults attending the camp, including two scouts and one adult who served as Order of the Arrow (OA) staff.

The boys went snowshoeing, built igloos, went tubing and worked on numerous merit badges.

Upcoming campout activities this summer include a week-long summer camp at Camp Meriwether along the Oregon Coast and a 50 mile canoe trip along the Missouri River in Eastern Montana.
