Kentridge Sweeps to Eighth Straight
State Judo Title

High school Judo powerhouse Kentridge swept to an unprecedented eighth straight prep state judo title.

“We had more that a few doubters at the beginning of the season in March, but the team stayed focused and we just gained strength as the season progressed.  My hat is off to these kids, they have work hard all season long," said first year Varsity Head Coach, Jeffery Tibeau.

The Puget Sound H.S. Judo League champion Chargers captured six first place medals which made a final tally of 89 points and Enumclaw garnered 53 points for a distant second place finish at the state meet held at Kentridge High School on Saturday, May 9.

“Our team had some good showings at this meet, but their (Kentridge) line up is just too powerful,” said Enumclaw Head Coach, Mike Nepper.

Kentlake took third with 61, their highest finish in a state competition to date. Kent Meridian showed well, taking fourth, and Kentwood rounds out Kent Schools' showing, taking fifth place.

Kentridge Chargers were led by senior co-captains Matt Degrate (men’s +100kg), Matt Campos (men’s -100kg) and Fiona Kang (women’s -78 kg) who all scored first place finishes in their respective weight categories.

“We have won State every year since I was a freshman, we just expect to win, anything less is….. well, just unthinkable for a Charger judoist,” said KR Senior co-captain Matthew Campos.

First place wins were also scored by Christie Chin (women’s – 63kg), sophomore Ed Kuo (men’s -55kg), and freshman Alton Lu (men’s 66kg).

The State win was the third jewel of the so-called “Judo Triple Crown” for the Chargers, who had previously captured The Wilson Judo Challenge Cup along with the league title with an undefeated season of 8-0.
