Fairwood Updates on Public Safety,
FCN Neighborhood Watch Encouraged

Our readers have asked that we provide regular updates on our most basic concern for the area: Public Safety. We've heard your requests and are committed to spreading the word on safety, relaying the most recent activities to heighten awareness and assist you in helping our local King County Sheriff. We want to do our part to work with you to make the place we call home safe as safe as it can be.
Community Block Watches and National Night Out events reinforce the role neighbors play in the safety of its community. Fairwood Community News will post all forms of communication we receive from our local King County Sheriff, and we're also asking our local neighbors, business owners, schools, homeowners associations, apartment managers and all other local groups to notify us of criminal activity and public safety issues that will assist in keeping our community a safer place to live.
Here's a nice note from a local concerned citizen, emphasizing the need for ongoing, community communication:
I know where I live is fairly nice and safe but there are instances of people that are questionable that frequent the area. Recently my toddler's Little Tikes push car was stolen from right outside the front door. Neighbors I have talked to have had similar things happen on occasion. I saw your national night out and was thinking that maybe we could do an online Neighborhood Watch sort of thing. If something goes missing or stolen, then other people in the neighborhood can look for it or see if it turns up. It is just a thought and can more than be expanded on. I think if our community comes together even in the high tech world possibly our children can have safer places to play, much like when I was a kid and the neighbors would keep in touch with each other.
We look forward to hearing from you and hope to post weekly updates.

Lake Desire Attempted Break In Today (8/17) – This morning at 6:30am two men in their early 20’s attempted to break into a home located at E Lk Desire Dr SE. The Caucasian men had shaved heads, long T-shirts and long shorts on. They tapped on the back door where there was a dog door. The owner woke up and asked what they wanted. They said they were looking for the ‘house for sale.’ She told them the house was not for sale and to get off the property. She called the police and shortly thereafter they were captured. The sheriff came back awhile later and told her the men had box cutters and plastic gloves in their pockets, and other items for breaking into a home. The police found out they were driving a rental car and casing the home in advance. Please be on the lookout just in case they are part of a ring of thieves. Fortunately, these men should be off the street for awhile. Submitted by Nancy Gonzales.
Large Doberman Attacks Cyclist Yesterday (8/16)- To anyone who bikes or hikes around Lake Desire or Echo Mountain - Yesterday afternoon, my husband was biking on the main road on Lake Desire. A large doberman - larger than average - came charging down a winding driveway unleashed. He jumped up and grabbed my husband on the thigh - while he was biking. My husband jumped off his bike, stopped and stared the dog down while yelling at someone to come and get their dog. The dog continued to attack, charging at him and trying to bite his ankles. The dog finally started walking away when my husband got back on his bike and rode home. He has a 1 1/2" bit mark on his upper thigh. Other people by the boat dock on the lake also said the dog charged at them as well while they were walking to the lake. My husband is 6'0 tall and 180 pounds. I can't imagine what this dog could have done to a child. Animal Control has been called. The officer stated that if the dog does this to you, do not run. The dog will continue to chase and attack. Please be careful walking around the lake or the trails in back of Woodside as this dog is extremely vicious. When you spot a cart that needs to be returned, the local King County Sheriff's office is encouraging all to contact the local store to retrieve its property. Shopping carts are costly items, and they will appreciate your help.
Coyote Sightings - Several coyote sightings have been reported in the Candlewood Ridge area, with the most recent sighting on July 6. A coyote was seen eating a dead cat next to Candlewood Ridge Park. Neighbors are encouraged to protect your children and pets.
King County Sheriff Update - Auto theft arrests are down and prosecutions are up in July, apparently linked to longer prison terms for thieves. Very few reports of stolen cars in the Fairwood area in the past month. Fourth of July was busy, but responses were linked mostly to minor injuries. Park disturbances are now reported under a new number: 09-179682. Recent disturbances reported in Candlewood and Carriage Wood parks have been bottles and litter left or thrown over homeowners' fences. Graffiti continues to be a problem as well. Officer Shirley was notified that two pit bulls have been seen running in the CR park unattended and thinks he knows who they belong to and will follow up.
