May Garden Tips

This month's installment will provide you with gardening tips and tasks for May. It's all about helping you to work efficiently to make your homes beautiful year around. Why do more than you need? Check out some of our helpful suggestions.
Lawns
If you haven't aerated your lawn in the last two years, consider doing it soon. To aerate your lawn, rent one of the machines from the local hardware store and plug away!
If you're grappling with excess moss this year, explore the reason. Too much standing water and a weak concentration of grass can be reasons for increased moss growth. Some experts recommend you kill the moss with commercial products; don't forget to rake and reseed or the space will grow back with moss. Some suggest a shortcut to picking up the moss with a quick mow. If you do that, be sure to empty the moss into your recycle bin.
Rhodies and Azaleas
May is the time of year when Rhodies are blooming everywhere. Fairwood developments seem to have planted tons of these beauties throughout our neighborhoods, so take time to enjoy them! If your Rhodies are getting a bit large, enjoy pruning and deadheading the plants after their blooming season.
Gardens
If you have yet begun your garden, plant cool-weather crops such as broccoli, cabbage, peas, greens such as lettuce, and radishes. Check the package for best time to plant information. As soon as we have a consistent, 60-degree temperature, plant those warm-temperature crops.
Take a few moments to get out the hoe to control the baby weeds in your beds and gardens. It's easier to nail them early.
Weeds
Somewhat controversial, some may want to spray an application of weed and feed on your lawns to get a head start on dandelions and other weeds just waiting to plague you.
