Fairwood BECU ATM Morning Robbery,
KC Sheriff Seeks Community Assistance

Suspect (left) and Suspect's car (right)

King County Sheriff, November 16
The King County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help in identifying a man that attempted to rob a woman while she was making a deposit at an ATM last Sunday morning.

The incident occurred Sunday, November 11 at 7:42 a.m.  The victim was at the BECU ATM in the 14400 blk of SE Petrovitsky Rd making a deposit when she was approached from behind by the suspect.   The suspect asked the victim for her PIN and when the victim turned around to face him, he struck her in the head with a collapsible baton.

The suspect repeated his request for her PIN and struck the victim in the head again with the baton. The victim ran to her vehicle to escape but the suspect ran after her and broke her driver’s side window with the baton as she was trying to get away in her car.

The suspect fled in a vehicle described as a flat black (no shine) BMW, possibly a 1990s model, with matching molding and dark tinting on all the windows.   At the time of the robbery the vehicle did not have a front plate attached.  The vehicle was described as “well maintained.”

The suspect is described as a white male, in his 20’s, 5’8”, with light colored hair, and a thin nose.  He was last seen wearing a black ski mask, black jacket and black gloves.   He was also in possession of a collapsible baton and had some type of holster on his right hip.

If you have any information related to this crime, please call the King County Sheriff’s Office at (206) 296-3311 and refer to case number 12-262219.

New Deputies Assigned to Southeast King County

King County, October 19
King County Sheriff Steve Strachan announced last week that 14 new deputies will be hired over the course of the next few months to “beef up” patrol in unincorporated areas of the county.

Today, Sheriff Strachan said he anticipates that as many as three of the new deputies will be assigned to the unincorporated areas in the southeast part of the county that surround Maple Valley, Auburn and Enumclaw.

“The southeast area is geographically spread out, which has traditionally made response times longer,” said King County Sheriff Steve Strachan.  “Adding more deputies to the area will better serve our residents in terms of service and visibility, along with improving our response, and will add a safety factor for our deputies when critical backup is needed.”

“This is just what the public expects from its elected leaders – to deliver the services they need within the extremely limited revenues we have,” said King County Executive Dow Constantine. “By collaborating with his staff to create new efficiencies, the Sheriff is able to put more police on the street within his existing budget, and I thank him for that.”

The hiring process began in September and will continue through January of 2013. The 14 new deputies will complete training by the end of 2013.

Lindbergh Robotics Students apply skills
in summer internship

September 14
Six members of Lindbergh High School’s award-winning FIRST Robotics Team participated in a paid internship this summer at RedDot Corporation, an engineering/manufacturing company in Tukwila, to learn about and contribute to different positions in manufacturing and engineering.

The internship was made available through the Center for Advanced Manufacturing Puget Sound, which sponsors Lindbergh's FIRST Robotics Team. Lindbergh students were fully-immersed in the company’s operations, from information technology to electrical engineering, and used the time to learn more about jobs they might pursue upon graduation. RedDot designs and builds mobile HVAC systems and components for a wide range of heavy-duty commercial and military vehicles.

The experience for Red Dot was also very positive. According to Red Dot President and CEO Randy Gardiner, "The students were awesome, and our organization learned a lot from the experience as well. We look forward to building upon this first year with an even better program next summer."

Tiffany Park Elementary Teachers, Staff
give new students door-to-door welcome

September 14
Nine teams of Tiffany Park Elementary School teachers and staff members recently visited the homes of all 86 incoming kindergarten students to personally welcome the new students and families to school. The visits provide parents—most who are new to having a child in school and some who are new to the country—an opportunity to ask questions and clarify concerns.

The visits also provide opportunities for school staff to make a personal connection between home and school. In many cases, families eagerly invited the teachers to stay for a cup of coffee or tea.

In one apartment complex, scores of older students from Tiffany Park excitedly escorted the visiting teachers from apartment to apartment.

Fairwood-Area National Merit Scholars Announced

September 14
Officials of National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) announced the names of approximately 16,000 Semifinalists in the 58th annual National Merit Scholarship Program, and eight local students also made that list.

Local Semifinalists Include:
Kent Meridian High School
Jonathan W. Hanson

Kentlake High School:
Kyle J. Owsen
Michael T. Raybuck

Kentridge High School
James K. Dugan
Timothy B. Ie
Emily M. Sanford
Karanbir Singh
Jeannette L. Yu

These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 8,300 National Merit® Scholarships, worth more than $32 million, that will be offered next spring.

To be considered for a Merit Scholarship® award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. About 90 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and approximately half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar® title.

More than 1.5 million juniors in over 22,000 high schools entered the 2013 National Merit Program by taking the 2011 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, which represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest scoring entrants in each state. The number of Semifinalists in a state is proportional to the state's percentage of the national total of graduating seniors.

To become a Finalist, a Semifinalist and their high school must submit a detailed scholarship application, which includes the student's academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, and honors and
awards received. A Semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn sat scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test.

Approximately 15,000 Semifinalists are expected to advance to the Finalist level, and it is from this group that all National Merit Scholarship winners will be chosen.

Three types of National Merit Scholarship awards will be offered in the spring of 2013. Every Finalist will compete for one of 2,500 National Merit $2,500 Scholarships that will be awarded on a state representational basis. About 1,000 corporate-sponsored scholarships will be provided by some 240 corporations and business organizations for Finalists who meet their specified criteria, such as children of the grantor's employees or residents of communities where sponsor plants or offices are located.

In addition, approximately 200 colleges and universities are expected to finance some 4,800 college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards for Finalists who will attend the sponsor institution.

National Merit Scholarship winners of 2013 will be announced in four nationwide news releases beginning in April and concluding in July. These scholarship recipients will join more than 291,000 other distinguished young people who have earned the Merit Scholar title.

Fairwood's Fire District 40
Station 17 Remodel Begins

September 12
After many months of planning the Fairwood Fire Station #17 will begin a 6-month major overhaul project consisting of improvements to the interior and exterior of the building that was originally built in 1971. After 41 years of service to the community, the fire station no longer meets current safety standards and operational service requirements.

Project Manager Peter Renner said, “This project illustrates the Fire Commissioner’s commitment to providing a public safety building that meets the needs of the community that will serve the Fairwood area for another 41 years. The project will simplify the general layout of the station, repair previous seismic damage and retrofit the building to current seismic standards, replace the HVAC systems with energy-efficient equipment, provide a code-compliant fire suppression system, provide gender neutral bathroom facilities, and replace worn cabinetry, flooring and finishes. Our focus has been on safety, durability, and lowering operating costs.”

“The much needed improvements to the Fairwood Station, which houses a fire engine and aid unit, will allow our firefighters a safe building that meets the operational needs of our department,” said Renton Fire & Emergency Services Deputy Chief Erik Wallgren.

“The firefighters will be temporarily housed in an apartment directly behind the fire station during the construction. This will allow for a continued and effective response to emergencies without compromising response times or a delay in the project. The only operational change affected by the project is that the aid unit will be responding from Station #13 located on 108th Ave SE during the construction. The engine company will request the aid unit for those patients requiring transport to the nearest medical facility.”

Once the project is completed, the aid unit will return to Fairwood Station #17.

Tips Lead Sheriffs to Maple Valley
Robbery Suspect

King County Sheriff, September 12
Tips from viewers of the “Washington’s Most Wanted” television show led police to a bank robbery suspect after his photo and the details of the case were aired on the show. Fairwood Community News also posted the alert below.

King County Sheriff’s Detectives arrested the 30 year-old man at his parents’ home in Maple Valley on Monday night.  Detectives said after the case aired on Washington’s Most Wanted on Friday night, tips from viewers were received over the weekend.

The Maple Valley Bank of America branch, located on Witte Road, was robbed August 24 around 4pm.

Detectives said the suspect is also believed to be the same man that robbed a Key Bank in Des Moines and a Chase Bank in Kent.  Both of those robberies occurred September 6.

Fairwood United Methodist Treats Neighbors
to 27th Annual Chicken Barbecue

September 11
Fairwood United Methodist Church (FUMC) opened its doors, or in this case, barbecue, to the greater Fairwood Community with its 27th annual Chicken Barbecue this past Saturday, September 8.

The men's group at FUMC assembles a 30-foot-long barbecue to grill 2,000 pounds of chicken with special secret sauce and 260 ears of corn for hungry neighbors.

The annual tradition dates back to 1975, when the Fairwood of today was not as it is. According to Dick Matthais, alder was collected for the barbecue from wood gathered on land being developed just southeast of The Firs. Planning for the first event included digging the huge barbecue pit, cinder blocks collected and grills were fabricated.

The church's multi-purpose room is set up for diners, and additional volunteers meet, greet, and serve the neighbors. The heritage of great community barbecues often includes a secret special barbecue sauce, and the FMUC also has a secret signature sauce. The sauce was developed long ago by Helen Schroeder. Alder-cooked corn on the cob is also a highlight for diners.

After the diners trickle out and the children's big toy is deflated, volunteers ensure that nothing remaining is allowed to go to waste. Leftovers are sold at a bargain, half price, on Sunday to members after church.

What, if anything, is left after that sale goes to local charities such as food for the homeless.

Maple Valley Bank Robbery, Public Help Sought

King County Sheriff, Aug. 27
A Maple Valley branch of Bank of America was robbed last Friday afternoon, August 24. The suspect, described as a while male, entered the bank and presented a note to the teller and fled with an undisclosed amount of money. According to information released today by the King County Sheriff's office, no weapon was shown or implied.

The suspect is described as a white male in his 20s, 5' 9" tall, heavy build, with black hair, black shirt, and blue jeans. Bank cameras captured photos of the crime, and the public's assistance in leads to the suspect's identity are sought.

The Maple Valley Bank of America is located at 23730 Witte Rd SE.

The public is requesting that anyone with information on the suspect's identity is asked to call the King County Sheriff’s Office at 206-296-3311 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

Callers to Crime Stoppers may remain anonymous and are eligible to receive a $1,000 cash reward if the information leads to an arrest and charge of the person(s) involved.

To be eligible for the reward, a person must provide the information through Crime Stoppers.

Driver vs. Power Pole: Neither Wins
Fairwood Loses AM Power

July 12
Around 7 a.m. this morning, those getting ready for work found themselves in the semi-dark with an immediate power outage. The din of traffic along Petrovitsky was immediately interrupted by safety and emergency sirens for the driver who had a direct hit with a power pole near the 156th Ave. SE entrance to Carriagewood.

Power crews were immediately on the scene, working hard to get the power back on in the neighborhood. According to Puget Sound Energy, about 1,000 homes were without power for about two hours.

Puget Sound Energy was still on the site late this afternoon, working hard to put everything back in its place. PSE's tweeter thanked all Fairwood residents for their patience.

The status of the driver is unknown.

Fairwood newsie Erin Riley shared this photo of the scene.

Watch for our June statistics in the next few days, and note the trends.  Encourage your neighbors to monitor this data.

Maple Valley Teen stabbing story fabricated

May 31 - King County Sheriff
The 15 year old girl who reported being attacked and stabbed while jogging on a trail in Maple Valley last Wednesday has admitted to detectives that she made the story up.

Detectives working the case said parts of the girl’s story did not match up with evidence found during the investigation.  Detectives would not go into detail about the specifics of the evidence but did say that when they presented the information to the girl she admitted that she had lied.

“While it is unfortunate that the false report created anxiety and a great deal of work for our deputies, we are pleased that there is closure for the community and that the student finally did do the right thing,” said King County Sheriff Steve Strachan.

Detectives would not say what reason the girl gave for making up the story but did say they are working with prosecutors who will decide if charges will be filed for false reporting.

Teen stabbed on Lake Wilderness Trail

May 23
King County-  King County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a house in the 23900 block of SE 284th Street around 8:00 PM on March 23 to a report of a 15 year-old girl who had been stabbed while walking on the Lake Wilderness Trail.

The girl told deputies that she had been walking on the trail when she was approached by two men.  The girl said the men called her names as she walked by, and as she tried to avoid them, they grabbed her and threw her to the ground.   The girl told police the men tried to take her pants off and one of the men stabbed her in the leg as she tried to get away.

The girl was able to get away and ran to a friend’s house in the 23900 block of SE 284th Street, where 911 was called.  When police arrived, they said the girl was hysterical and suffering from a stab wound to the leg.  Police describe the wound as “non-life threatening.”

Deputies were unable to locate the suspects during a search of the area.  The suspects are described as two white males, late teens to early 20s.  One of the men was possibly wearing a dark hoodie and camouflage shorts.

If you have information about this case please call the King County Sheriff’s Office at (206) 296-3311 (24 hours) or 911.

King County Sheriff, March 4
Two Kentlake High School students have been arrested by King County Sheriff’s deputies for possessing a handgun on school property.  At approximately 10:00 a.m. today, Sheriff’s deputies received a call from school officials who said two students had been showing off a gun to other students.

Deputies responded and contacted the 16 and 17 year-old males in a classroom.   The 16 year-old
had the gun concealed in his backpack which was reportedly given to him by the 17 year-old.
