Fairwood Library Reopens

Originally opened in January 1986, Fairwood neighbors celebrated the grand reopening of the Fairwood Library this past Saturday, December 6. A ribbon cutting ceremony took place prior to opening library doors at 10 a.m. Officials present included Interim King County Library System Director Julie Acteson and King County Councilmember Reagan Dunn, along with thrilled Fairwood patrons and supporters.

The 5,000 square foot expansion addresses the high volume of patrons the library serves. Because of its size, the 20,000 square foot library is categorized as a mid-size facility in the King County Library System (KCLS). The expansion was funded by and a part of the 2004 $172 million KCSL Bond Issue Capital Plan Program.

“This is a great day for the greater Fairwood community," said Dunn.  Nearly 80 percent of the population in Fairwood uses this facility: they check out videos and music, ‘borrow’ eBooks, and take advantage of the free wifi to access the internet. The newly expanded library will increase these opportunities and better serve this community.”

Kentridge Players to feature
'Little Shop of Horrors' musical this Fall

Award-winning Kentridge Players are busy preparing for their fall musical, "Little Shop of Horrors," set to run November 12-22.

This comedy horror rock musical by composer Alan Menken and writer Howard Ashman features a hapless florist shop worker who raises a plant that feeds on human blood and flesh. The musical is based on the low budget, 1960 black comedy film "Little Shop of Horrors," directed by Roger Corman.

The music, composed by Menken in the style of early 1960s rock and roll, doo-wop and early Motown, includes several well-known tunes, including the title song, “Skid Row,” “ Somewhere that’s Green,” and “ Suddenly Seymour.”

"Kentridge Players are excited to be working with a plant used in professional productions in New York City.  It has been shipped in for this production and will provide quite an unforgettable experience," said Director Jennifer Grajewski. 

Each week, performances run Wednesday through Saturday, with a 7:00 pm curtain time. An additional 2 pm matinee is scheduled each Saturday. Tickets are $8-10.

Grant Awarded to Fairwood West for Pipe Repairs

The King County Flood Control District Board of Supervisors unanimously approved funding to the Fairwood West Home Owners Association (FWHOA) for the repair of a failing pipe within its neighborhood. On September 29, the Board gave its approval to fund repairs from a newly created program aimed at reducing the impacts of local flooding.

The Molasses Creek Pipe Repair Project, located at the Fairwood West HOA Park, will receive a $400,000 grant to assist in the replacement and repair of a failing pipe segment conveying Molasses Creek. Total pipe failure could lead to flooding upstream and increased sedimentation downstream.  

“I am pleased the District can step in and have a positive impact in the Fairwood community,” said Reagan Dunn, Chair of the Flood Control District. Dunn represents the unincorporated community of Fairwood and the Fairwood West HOA on the Flood Control District. 

“This grant award will help to replace a failing section of pipe that if left unrepaired would place neighborhood residents and those living downstream of the pipe at risk of significant damage from a flooding event," said Dunn.

"Without the aid of this King County Flood Control District grant, the Fairwood West Home Owners Association would be unable to fund a flood prevention repair that meets all current requirements,” said Adrian Ryneveld of the FWHOA. “We thank Reagan Dunn and the Flood Control District for their interest and support of this community project.”

The new grant program targets flood reduction projects throughout King County.  A total of $2.6 million in grants were available for 2014, with the funds being awarded on a competitive basis by the Flood Control District. Eligible applicants included homeowner associations, private non-profit organizations or associations, schools, special districts, tribes, and King County jurisdictions. Funded projects must be completed within 36 months of receiving funds.

Wild Car in Beds Down in Fairwood

As Fairwood neighbors moved into a quiet Sunday evening getting ready for the work week, a little excitement drew a crowd when an errant car plowed into Fairway Village Condominum's flower beds on the corner of SE 176th Street and 147th Ave. NE.

The driver of the four-door sedan appeared uninjured and bit embarrassed as King County Sheriffs processed the accident that occurred around 6:30 p.m.

Thankfully, it appeared that no pedistrians were injured or other cars were involved in the incident.

Fairwood-Area National Merit Scholars Announced

Officials of National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) announced the names of approximately 16,000 Semifinalists in the 60th annual National Merit Scholarship Program, and three local students also made that list.

These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,600 National Merit® Scholarships, worth about $33 million, to be offered next spring.

To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. About 90 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and approximately half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar® title.

More than 1.4 million juniors in over 22,000 high schools entered the 2015 National Merit Program by taking the 2013 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, which represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest scoring entrants in each state. The number of Semifinalists in a state is proportional to the state's percentage of the national total of graduating seniors.

To become a Finalist, a Semifinalist and their high school must submit a detailed scholarship application, which includes the student's academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received. A Semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn SAT scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test.

Approximately 15,000 Semifinalists are expected to advance to the Finalist level, and it is from this group that all National Merit Scholarship winners will be chosen.

Three types of National Merit Scholarship awards will be offered in the spring of 2015. Every Finalist will compete for one of 2,500 National Merit $2,500 Scholarships that will be awarded on a state representational basis. About 1,000 corporate-sponsored scholarships will be provided by some 240 corporations and business organizations for Finalists who meet their specified criteria, such as children of the grantor's employees or residents of communities where sponsor plants or offices are located.

In addition, approximately 200 colleges and universities are expected to finance some 4,100 college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards for Finalists who will attend the sponsor institution.

National Merit Scholarship winners of 2015 will be announced in four nationwide news releases beginning in April and concluding in July. These scholarship recipients will join more than 308,000 other distinguished young people who have earned the Merit Scholar title.

Flood Grant Recommendation

The Executive Committee of the King County Flood Control District gave its approval to a recommendation that the Fairwood West Home Owners Association (FWHOA) receive a District grant from a newly created program aimed at reducing the impact of local flooding. The recommendation was approved at the Executive Committee’s August 18 meeting.

At the Ridge Theatre Presents Jekyll & Hyde

Opening this week, At the Ridge Theatre opens this week with a production of 'Jekeyll & Hyde' at Kentridge's Performing Arts Center.

Running Thursday through Sunday with "unusual" performance times on the weekends (see below), this year's production runs three weeks, from July 24 through August 9.

Intended for mature audiences, this evocative tale of the epic battle between good and evil is based on Robert Louis Stevenson's classic story about a brilliant doctor whose experiments with human personality create a murderous counterpart. Convinced the cure for his father's mental illness lies in the separation of man's evil nature from his good, Dr. Henry Jekyll unwittingly unleashes his own dark side, wreaking havoc in the streets of late 19th century London as the savage, maniacal Edward Hyde.

At the Ridge Theatre is a 501c3 non-profit community theatre dedicated to providing quality musical theatre experiences for our community.  All profits from the production are awarded to the actors in the form of college scholarships.  Our performers include actors from all over the region, and are ages 17-55.  ART is in its 14th year of operation and is proud to be supported by grants from the Kent Arts Commission & 4 Culture.

Fairwood Property Values Increase 17 Percent

King County Assessor Lloyd Hara’s office mailed the 2014 property valuations to all residential property owners in Area 30 – Fairwood located in Southwest King County. Area 30 residential property values generally increased by +17.1% but individual property values might vary. The Assessor’s Office will continue to mail out more than 600,000 residential and commercial valuation notices to taxpayers throughout the rest of King County between July and October.

Residential property is assessed each year at 100 percent of its true and fair market value in money, which is defined by Washington State law as the amount of money that a willing and unobligated buyer is willing to pay a willing and unobligated seller. Residential values are determined based on multiple sales of similar properties.

The King County Assessor’s Office annually revalues all properties and conducts a physical inspection on each property once every six years. The last physical inspection of the Fairwood area was conducted in 2011.

“Continuing the 2013 trend, property values are increasing across King County as we emerge from the Great Recession,” said Assessor Lloyd Hara. “In 2013, we saw a residential increase in 76 out of 86 residential areas in King County and we expect to see continued growth in residential values for 2014.”

Assessor Lloyd Hara would like to remind all property owners to carefully review the information contained in the valuation notice. If you feel a mistake has been made in valuing your property, it is recommended that you contact the Assessor’s Office directly before filing an appeal at 206-296-7300 or assessor.info@kingcountygov.

Property owners can review their property information online using eReal Property and review our Area Reports on the Assessor’s homepage at www.kingcounty.gov/assessor or with the Assessor’s staff to make sure an error has not been made. King County allows 60 days from the valuation’s postmark date to file an appeal with the King County Board of Equalizations.

Some low-income seniors, disabled veterans, or disabled persons retired because of a disability might be eligible for a property tax deferral or exemption. The King County Assessor’s Office encourages you or those you know to contact our office to determine eligibility.

Lake Desire Yard/Rummage Sale Scheduled for Saturday, June 7
The Lake Desire Neighborhood is holding their annual Yard/Rummage Sale this Saturday, June 7, starting at 8 a.m. Rather than visiting individual homes for sales shopping, Lake Desire neighbors will sell their items at the Lake Desire Clubhouse. Head east on Petrovitsky and turn left (north) at the Northwood Middle School intersection. Follow the signs to the clubhouse.

Lake Desire Water Rescue, Safety Reminder

Lake Desire neighbors reported a early summer water incident that put both victim and rescuers in jeoparday.

Apparently a man fell into Lake Desire while boating. Two others attempted to rescue him, but they also fell into the lake, according to Kathy Wetherbee and Michele Bettinger. 911 was called, all three were rescued, and apparently all are in good condition.

All are reminded to practice safety while in and on the water. That begins with the use of life jackets. Early summer water activities in cold Puget Sound rivers and lakes should be enjoyed with proper safety gear.

Cedar River Landslide Forces Closure

King County Sheriff

The King County Sheriff has ordered an emergency closure of the Cedar River due to a landslide. The closure is effective immediately until further notice and covers all river activities; to include fishing, boating, floating and swimming.

The closure is from the Maple Valley Highway (State Route 169) to the Maxwell Road at the Maple Valley Highway.

There have been no injuries reported, and minor property damage. No homes have been evacuated at this time.

Fairwood Spring Musical Theatre Season Begins

To our local high schools, spring means culminating drama programs, showcasing large production musicals right in Fairwood's backyard. Kent School District's Kentlake, Kentridge, and Kentwood high schools again will offer classic musicals at affodable prices.

Shrek the Musical: Kentlake Drama presents Shrek the Musical based on the award-winning DreamWorks film about everyone’s favorite green ogre. In a faraway kingdom turned upside down, things get ugly when an unseemly ogre, not a handsome prince, shows up to rescue a feisty princess. Throw in a talking donkey, a villain with a short temper, and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits and you’ve got a must-seemusical comedy for the whole family.

Directed by Pam Cressey, Shrek the Musical runs April 23-26 and April 30-May 3 at the Kentlake Performing Arts Center. West Side Story: Kentwood Players will perform the classic Amerian musical West Side Story, based on the award-winning 1957 Broadway production and 1961 movie.

Inspired by Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story is set in the Upper West Side of New York City in the mid-1950s. The clash is between two ethnically diverse gangs, the Puerto-Rican Sharks and the Polish-American Jets. Tony of the Jets and Maria, linked to the Sharks, fall in love, fueling further reason to fight.

Directed by Rebecca Lloyd, performances run from May 14-17 and 21-24 at Kentwood High School's Performing Arts Center, where tickets will be sold.

Soos Creek Trail Expansion Continues

The Soos Creek Trail expansion project is moving forward!  The trail, developed and constructed in phases along Soos Creek wetlands on the Kent and Renton East Hill, will continue to expand with the eventual goal of extending down the hill to intersect with the Cedar River Trail. This exciting, 11-mile trail in total length will offer opportunities to make outings even longer!

Mr. Karan Soi, the Capital Project Manager for this project, provided a status update on this much anticipated expansion.

"The budgets to complete the design and construction documents for the  Soos Creek Trail Segment 1 (SE 192nd Street to SE Petrovitsky Road) were approved in the 2014 budget. We are currently in the process of signing the contract with our Consultants to complete the Segment 1 design from 60% to 100% Construction Documents, including all the permitting approvals. The bidding and construction of the project will take place in early 2015, contingent upon the approval of the construction funds for the Segment 1 in the 2015 Budget by the King County Council,"said Soi.

The drawing above shows a breakdown of how the remaining segments are divided.

And what about the rest of the segments?  "Design and construction of the remaining segments 2,3, & 4 will be completed depending upon the priority and availability of budgets in the coming years," said Soi.

Fairwood Resident Erin Aboudara Appointed to King County Women's Advisory Board

The Metropolitan King County gave its unanimous approval to the appointment of Erin Aboudara of Fairwood in unincorporated King County to serve as a representative on the King County Women’s Advisory Board for Council District 9.

“Erin has spent her entire life in King County and is very involved in her community,” said Councilmember Reagan Dunn, who nominated Aboudara to represent the Fairwood area on the County Council. 

“Her work on the Kent PTA and the leadership roles she has held representing over 1,500 homeowners of the Fairwood Greens home owners association, gives her a unique perspective to bring to the board," said Dunn.

“I am excited to be appointed to the King County Women’s Advisory Board to represent women of Council District 9.  I look forward to continue advocating for women’s issues such as gender pay equity, flexible scheduling for parents of young children or who may be caring for a senior parent, and equality in hiring and promotion practices in both the public and private sector for all women in King County,” said Aboudara.  “It was an honor to have been nominated by Councilmember Reagan Dunn and I enjoy serving the public in this capacity.”

The King County Women’s Advisory Board (WAB) makes recommendations to the King County Executive and the King County Council to ensure the needs, rights and well-being of women are taken into account by county government.  The board was established in 1978 as a nonpartisan advisory board, with members appointed by the King County Executive and the King County Council.

Boy Scout Troop 455
Prepares for Annual Pancake Breakfast March 8

The community is invited to the Boy Scout Troop #455 annual Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, March 8th, 7-11am at Fairwood Community United Methodist Church - 15255 SE Fairwood Blvd. in Renton. There will also be a book fair and bake sale as part of this annual fundraiser.  Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for kids 6-10 & seniors. Kids under 5 are FREE! Tickets will be available at the door. 

Proceeds from this event will support the activities of the Boy Scouts throughout the year including camping, hiking, cycling, summer camp, and community service projects. The Boy Scouts have been busy in the past few months. In December, they volunteered at the Salvation Army Food Bank in Renton. In January, they collected Christmas trees to recycle in the area for donations, and they also participated in Klondike. This month, the Scouts will have a chance to snowshoe and build an igloo as well as attend Winter Camp held at Camp Sheppard. Boy Scouts will also be collecting canned food for a food drive on March 22nd so keep an eye out for flyers at your home in March.

Lake Desire Murder Suspect Arrested

King County Sheriff's detectives arrested a 34 year-old man last night in connection to a murder in the Lake Desire area last week.

Detectives arrested the man last night around 6 p.m. in the 1700 block of S. Hosmer St.
in Tacoma.  Police would not say what led to the arrest, but said they are still looking for other suspects and a vehicle believed to have been used in the crime.

The vehicle is described as a purple, 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser with Washington license plate AKY8871.

Police are asking anyone with information about this vehicle or crime to call the King County Sheriff's Office at 206-296-3311 or call Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.  Callers to Crime Stoppers may remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.

Lake Desire Victim Identified by KC Sheriff, Reward Offered

King County Sheriff’s detectives are seeking information on a murder that occurred Monday night in southeast King County near Lake Desire.

On Monday at approximately 10:40 .pm., police responded to a report of a 27 year-old man not breathing in a house in the 17800 block of Lake Desire Dr.   The Medical Examiner determined the 27 year old man, identified as Ryan Prince (pictured at left), had died of gunshot wounds.

Detectives believe Prince may have interrupted a burglary involving multiple suspects and died after being shot by the intruders.   The residents of the home are owners/operators of The Solution, a medical marijuana business.

Detectives are asking anyone with information related to this crime to call the King County Sheriff’s Office at 206-296-3311, or you can call Crime Stoppers at (800)-222-TIPS (8477). You may remain anonymous and be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.

Suspicious Death Near Lake Desire

King County Sheriff’s Detectives are investigating a suspicious death that occurred overnight near Lake Desire.

Just after 10:30 p.m., deputies responded to a house at 17807 E Lake Desire Drive to a report of a man not breathing.  When deputies arrived they found a 27 year-old man who appeared to be deceased.  Medics arrived and pronounced the man dead at the scene.

Detectives said the death appears to be suspicious and will treat the case as a homicide investigation.  Detectives did not provide any of details of why they believe the death was suspicious.

No further information is available at this time, according to Sergeant Cindi West, King County Sheriff's Office.

Lake Desire Residents and any others that may have witnessed activites are urged to contact Christopher.johnson
@kingcounty.gov. Johnson reportedly is the investigator in the case and is interested in speaking with neighbors who have security cameras. Those cameras may have recorded sounds of gunshots at about 8 p.m. last night, according to Lake Desire's President Heather Stafford.

This neighborhood has experienced a number of incidents recently, including mail and auto theft.

All Fairwood neighbors are encouraged to remember Block Watch efforts keep all our homes more secure. We're all encouraged to watch out for our neighbors and report any suspicious activities. That extra effort to protect each other can only help to stop these egregious acts.

Fairwood deserves more than this.

Questions Fairwood Residents, Flees

A white male posing as a sheriff’s deputy escaped after encountering an on-duty King County Sheriff deputy who responded after residents called 911. The incident occurred around 10:15 p.m. on Friday, February 14. 

The imposter questioned residents of a Fairwood apartment complex in the 14600 block of SE 176 Street. Residents were told that he was looking for an auto theft suspect.  The impersonating suspect reportedly wore a navy colored tee shirt with “SHERIFF” on it.  He also wore dark pants and carried a holstered revolver, a walkie-talkie-style radio, and a knife in his pocket.

Note: This address is the location of the Fairwood Villa Condominiums.

Suspicious about the exchange, residents called 911.  A real King County Sheriff’s deputy responded just moments later and saw the suspect, who was about 200 feet away.  The deputy called out, and the man fled behind a fence, causing the deputy to lose sight of the suspect. 

Additional deputies responded with a tracking K-9, and a KCSO helicopter assisted in the search.  Despite the available resources, deputies believe the suspect fled in a nearby car.

Witnesses described the man as being about 5’8” tall, weighing about 180 pounds, with dark brown hair and olive skin.  He is believed to be a white or Hispanic male in his 30s. 

Criminal Impersonation in the second degree (RCW 9a.60.045) is a gross misdemeanor.   The King County Sheriff’s Office is asking all with information on this case to call 206-296-3311.

12th Man Spirit on Fire at Boulevard Lane!

What a season for our beloved Hawks, huh?  Of course, this crazy season is going to come to a climactic end on Sunday in Super Bowl XLVIII as the Seahawks take on the Denver Broncos in Met Life Stadium in New Jersey.  It is going to be an exciting game!

Andrea Upton, Boulevard Lane's VP-Programs has made the season even more fun for us here in Boulevard Lane.  Every game day she has held a 12th Man flag raising at our entrance and invited all to come.  Typically, this occurred two hours before each game, and ended with a "GO HAWKS!" cheer.

This event took place for every single game throughout the season.  And in the rare occasion that Andrea couldn't make it, she passed the flag on to me and made me promise I would not let her down.  I didn't!

With the Super Bowl only a few hours away, Andrea has begun a fun tradition for our community.  More importantly, residents of Boulevard Lane have taken time to join us, even for a single flag raising.  It has meant a lot!

But we are not done yet.  No siree!  This Sunday is the game our Seahawks have been playing for since August and training for since last spring.  The final flag raising of the season and give our team one last "GO HAWKS!"  We will be meeting at the entryway at 2:00. 

Finally, I would like to share a few images taken of the 12th Man flag raising from throughout the season.  We had many regulars, including a superstitious neighbor who believed not attending would bring bad luck, and would call ahead if he was going to be late!  We also had many who, due to busy schedules, could only attend here and there.  They were still important!

I hope to see a CROWD of MASS PROPORTIONS on Sunday!  GO HAWKS!!
