February News

February 10, 2010

  1. Lake Desire Annual Community Meeting – 2/11/10 – 7:30pm at the Clubhouse – Come help plan events for the year or discuss current community issues.  We invited Officer Sam Shirley to talk about crime in the Fairwood area.  Contact Vi Anderson, 425-226-7005 or Heather Smith, Heather@smith.net if you would like to add a topic to the agenda.  All neighbors are welcome.  New officers will be announced from mail-in ballots.
  2. Lake Desire Memberships Due – Recently the annual newsletter went out to all residents.  If you did not get your printed version, please contact Heather Smith, Heather@smith.net and provide your address as some were not able to be forwarded. A big thanks to UPS Store in Fairwood for the free printing of the newsletter, and the Fairwood Flyer for paying for the mailing costs.  This helped out a great deal!  Please send your dues in to Lake Desire Community Club, c/o Vi Anderson, 17232 174th Ave SE Renton, WA 98058.
  • $10 Membership Fee – Seniors (65 or over) or families who want to only receive community E-mails.
  • $20 Full Membership Fee – Families who want to vote, receive E-mails, submit community e-mails such as lost pets, etc., and receive rental discounts.
  1. Vote for Lake Desire Officers – (Deadline 2/11/10) – Members, please send in your ballots or bring them to the annual meeting so we can announce the officers for 2010 at the meeting this Thursday.
  2. Emergency Preparedness Report – Back in July of 2009, we had a small forest fire on Echo Mountain.  This prompted some of the residents to start an Emergency Preparedness Team to see if we can be more prepared if something hit our local area. Thanks to Kathy Shertz for initiating the meetings, updating our resident information list and then turning over to Phyliss Miller, pamiller1234@aim.com, and Heather Smith, Heather@smith.net. We attended a ‘Map Your Neighborhood’ Community Meeting.  We have pamphlets available for all neighbors to pick up at our next Annual Meeting on 2/11/10 at 7:30pm.
  3. Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Training – Wednesdays, 3/31-5/19, 6-9pm & Sat. 5/22 8am-12pm. – Cost is $30 – Held at Fire Station #14 - Ages 18 & up. After a disaster, people should be prepared to take care of their own needs for a period of time until help arrives. The Renton Fire and Emergency Service Department offers CERT to teach individuals how to prepare their homes and neighborhoods to respond to disasters. Topics covered include personal preparedness, first aid, fire suppression, search and rescue, terrorism and team organization.  Instruction includes a combination of classroom and practical “hands-on” training. CERT graduates serve as their own “first responders” during the critical period after a disaster when existing resources are overwhelmed. For more information, call 425-430-6700 or visit http://www.rentonwa.gov/emergencies/default.
