- Lake Desire Water Quality – Jim & Betsy Locatelli have been working as volunteers with King County on Lake Desire water quality monitoring for several years now. I don't know if you've noticed, but Lake Desire algae has gotten a LOT worse, much of it probably due to fertilizer runoff from places like the Parks, Trovitsky Park, etc. We just received this note from Beth Cullen, bcullen2@comcast.net our contact for Lake monitoring at King County. It occurred to us that other Lake Desire residents also might be concerned about the increasing (and more toxic!) algae blooms, and might be interested in supporting the bill to limit phosphorus in fertilizers. Submitted by Betsy & Jim Locatelli, JimLocatel@aol.com.
- With the new executive, King County is re-looking at monitoring in the County. This would be an EXCELLENT time to write your King County Council members and the executive and let them know how important lake monitoring is to your community.
- There is a bill in front of the state that looks at helping control phosphorus inputs into our lakes and streams. The bill would ban the use of using fertilizer containing phosphorus on established lawns. This will not affect flower or vegetable gardens or when you try to establish new turf. The reason WALPA supports this ban is established lawns need nitrogen to stay nice and green, not phosphorus. We want to keep phosphorus off our lawns because we’re seeing increasing algae blooms that are becoming toxic. I am hoping you could take a moment and let your elected officials know that you support this and we’re trying to keep unnecessary phosphorus out of our lakes and streams. We’ve been working on this for three years now but we finally have some excellent support ranging from the Washington Environmental Council to Avista Utilities and Inland Paper Company over in Spokane. People are starting to realize that phosphorus causes major water quality issues and want this bill to pass. However, some of the fertilizer industry folks really don’t like the idea of change and are throwing up some major road blocks to this bill. We are hoping that the more voices we can get to speak up the greater chance we have to show that the majority is on the side of protecting lakes and streams. The bill numbers are Senate Bill 6289 and House Bill 2744 and you can find out more information at www.leg.wa.gov If you’d like to write in support you can find your elected officials at http://apps.leg.wa.gov/DistrictFinder/Default.aspx.

Minutes of Annual Lake Desire Meeting 2/11/10
7pm at Clubhouse
- Meeting Called to Order at 7:30pm – Vi called the meeting to order. Those in attendance: Vi & Darryl Anderson, Melody Sieger, Dewey & Susan Hill, Tom Sill, Officer Sam Shirley, Heather Stafford, Karen Walker, Craig Wallace, Donna Snure, Phyllis Miller, and Heather Smith.
- Treasurers Report – Tom Sill gave the Treasurer’s Report. This year due to a lack of rentals and lower membership renewals, we had a loss of $1,456.81. Although we do have a savings investment, at this loss rate we can go for 25 more years.
- Emergency Preparedness Team Report – Heather Smith provided a hand out of ways to communicate better during an emergency in the community. She is compiling a list of members with skills who could help out if for any reason first responders are unable to come to our area. Phyllis Miller went over the Map Your Community Brochure and the 9 steps to follow immediately after a disaster strikes. It was moved and seconded that up to $180 be spent to mail residents this brochure with a letter to help prepare and know what to do in case there is a disaster. They will be mailed out in March.
- Officer Shirley Crime Report – We welcomed Officer Shirley of Fairwood Store Front to help answer our questions, and report local crime. He said for the most part, Lake Desire is pretty quiet. He said they caught 4 burglers in the past 3 days in Fairwood. Unfortunately, criminals are routinely let go through the court systems. There are several laws that sometimes make it challenging. Recently a law was passed that once the suspect is handcuffed; the officer can not search the car without a warrant. He recommended the following safety measures: a security system with extra for glass breakage, front door should be visible if possible, and have pepper spray available if you are uncomfortable owning a gun. As for suspicious activity at the Boat Launch, the cul-de-sac, and other areas, he said just to drive through and show visibility. If you suspect something don’t hesitate to call 911. He would really like to help us start a Neighborhood Watch Program if anyone is interested. It was moved and seconded that Donna Snure purchase a few neighborhood watch signs for our community.
